“God tests and proves us by the common occurrences of life. It is the little things which reveal the chapters of the heart.” — Ellen G. White
As leaders, we often face moments when the weight of the world feels heavier than usual. In times of change—like Inauguration Day—it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the enormity of the challenges before us. The headlines scream division, uncertainty looms, and questions arise about the future of our communities and the causes we care about. Yet, amidst all this, there is a quiet truth we can anchor ourselves to: it is not the grand gestures but the small, consistent acts of faithfulness that prepare us for the work ahead.
Ellen G. White’s words remind us that life’s seemingly mundane moments are where our hearts are truly shaped. Every small decision we make, every seemingly insignificant choice to persevere, to act with integrity, and to extend kindness, is part of a larger process. These moments test and prove us, refining our character and preparing us for greater responsibilities.
Our work is deeply rooted in service to others. It’s tempting to believe that our effectiveness hinges on sweeping victories or transformative policies.
The truth is, our impact often lies in the steady, day-to-day work of building trust, creating spaces for dialogue, and showing compassion in tangible ways. The little things—listening to a colleague, extending grace to someone struggling, or remaining true to our values when it’s inconvenient—are the building blocks of lasting change.
Today, as a new chapter begins in our nation’s leadership, we are reminded that no matter who holds office, our calling remains constant. We are called to lead with integrity, to serve with humility, and to persist in the face of adversity. The challenges we face may feel daunting, but they are also opportunities for growth. In navigating them, we find the strength and clarity to continue our work with renewed purpose.
Let us not lose sight of the fact that leadership is a journey. It’s shaped as much by how we handle the quiet, unremarkable moments as it is by how we respond to crises. The same God who guides the movements of nations also works through the small, everyday occurrences of life. In these moments, we are being equipped, little by little, for the work we’ve been entrusted with.
So today, as you reflect on the state of the world and your role within it, remember this: the chapters of your heart are written in the small things. Stay the course. Continue to act with love, courage, and integrity. Trust that these seemingly small acts are part of a greater story—one of hope, resilience, and progress.
The work you are doing matters, and you are being prepared every step of the way. Keep going. Your leadership is needed now more than ever.
